![]() So they worked to make jobs for them, and now you have kind of made up work that people think actually needs to be done. However, they don't really set aside billets for that, so lots of folks who don't fit that bill ended up in those spots and just hating life. Whether or not those authorizations are really really legit is a completely different story.Īt Offutt the intent was getting some 1N3 bodies there to have join spouse opportunities for the 1A8s and 1N3s who fall in love at DLI. More often than not it is assigning bodies to positions which have an authorization. There is no real career progression path that builds upon one skill over another towards some outstanding goal. More often than not each situation is very unique and the Air Force will point to one of those two mantras when assigning duties. There is pendulum that swings between linguists focusing on language and not being utilized elsewhere, and linguists being all around analysts with a language capability which may or may not be utilized at a given time. I think overall we don't do a good job with managing expectations for assignments and positions. He didn't say that last part, that's just what some folks in the community laughed about. If you were offended then too bad you might not make it. It's like if you thought that was funny, then you're in the club. I hear he went to DLI a few years ago and gave a speech, maybe for language day or something, and he had an all call with the AF students and said linguists were basically weaponized autism. So the folks at Offutt of course got a huge kick out of it, and the folks in Hawaii got a kick out of it. They also don't see him much anymore so the warm and fuzzy is gone for a lot of population. A lot of people thought it was amazing, and really dope. Many of the folks who knew Chief Towberman have retired. Then they started enforcing the standards more, kicking people out of the career field or out of the Air Force, but also sending people to more classes. By that I mean that in the old days you used to be able to pass DLI and then later in your career have iffy DLPT scores and not pass and it wasn't a huge deal except you didn't get the extra money and you have to do more language study. On the other side of it the standards have increased. The money is also more, and is supposed to go up. There is also a ton more support for continued classes and training and language upkeep. The teaching has improved a great deal, the access to material via the internet makes everything pretty amazing. People come out with the same or higher scores, even though the DLPT has gotten much harder.
